"We receive our GSD’s mostly from animal shelters, other rescue organizations, breeders and individuals that for one reason or another cannot keep their dogs. According to the US Humane Society, every year between six and eight million dogs and cats enter US Shelters; three to four million of them are euthanized because of lack of homes. Twenty-five percent of the dogs entering shelters are purebreds which means approximately 450,000 purebred dogs every year. Thousands of German Shepherds do not make it out of the shelter alive. According to AKC 2003 registrations German Shepherd are the 4th most popular breed in the US. In the same year 4.8% of all AKC registered dogs were German Shepherds.
When we receive a GSD, depending how we received it, it has had all of its shots, been tested for heart-worm and has been spayed or neutered. Even though all this has been done the GSD is still taken to Dr. Lanier, our rescue Veterinarian. If a GSD is surrendered to us directly we have it carefully and thoroughly examined (vetted) by Dr. Lanier as well.
We are currently pulling our rescues out of Dade, Collier and Lee County Domestic Animal Services."
